More Britons Would Prefer Care at Home – What are the Barriers?

with No Comments

Most of us prefer to be in our own homes, especially when we need care. The comfort of familiar surroundings, cherished memories, and being close to loved ones is often far more appealing than moving to a residential care home. Recent reports confirm this strong preference, yet there are significant challenges that often prevent people from getting the care they want at home.

The Growing Wish for Home Care

A survey from YouGov, commissioned by the Homecare Association, shows a clear shift in what people want since the COVID-19 pandemic. Over a third (35%) of all those surveyed, and 38% of people over 65, said they are now more likely to choose care in their own homes.

This preference isn't just about avoiding hospitals or care homes. It's largely about lifestyle and having a choice:

  • Keeping Their Way of Life: Most respondents (64%) wanted to continue their usual routines and daily activities.

  • Having Control: Being able to control their own care decisions was important for 54%.

  • Staying Connected: For 53%, remaining close to family and friends was a key reason.

These reasons became even more important during the pandemic, when lockdowns and isolation highlighted how essential personal freedom and social connections are. While safety is always a concern, the emotional and practical benefits of staying at home are clearly strong motivators.

What Stops People from Getting Home Care? The Barriers and the Backlog

Even with this strong desire for home care, getting it isn't always easy. There are several systemic problems that create barriers and lead to major backlogs in our healthcare system.

One of the biggest issues is the "bed blocking" problem in NHS hospitals. You might have seen news about it – currently, one in seven hospital beds in England is taken by a patient who is medically well enough to go home. This isn't just a number; it means thousands of people are ready to leave hospital but can't because the right care arrangements aren't in place. These delayed discharges are often caused by hold-ups in arranging home care packages or finding a space in a care home.

Live-In Care: A Practical Way to Ease the Pressure

Live-in care offers a strong solution to many of these challenges. It doesn't just provide support; it helps people return home smoothly, keeps them independent, and significantly reduces pressure on our healthcare system.

The benefits are clear:

  • Faster Hospital Discharges: By providing a complete care solution, live-in care can speed up when someone can leave the hospital.
  • 24/7 Support: With a dedicated carer always there, people have continuous safety and peace of mind.
  • Better Health Outcomes: Being at home with personalised care often helps people recover better and feel generally healthier.
  • Higher Quality of Life: Staying in your own home, with your own things and routines, clearly improves how you live.
  • Comparable Costs: Often, the cost of live-in care is similar to other residential care options, but with the added benefit of one-to-one, continuous support in your own home.
